Seascape with Rain Clouds

Rain clouds gather low over a pewter sea in Seascape with Rain Clouds, a marine subject Winston Churchill built from broad, loaded strokes of oil paint. A squall line drags along the horizon while cold light breaks behind it, silvering the water. Churchill worked wet into wet, dragging slate, olive and chalk white over one another until the storm mass seems to carry real weight. Whitecaps flicker in short horizontal dabs. Hang it in a study or a reading room with deep shelving, where grey afternoons and distant weather feel like good company.
