Seascape

Grey swells roll toward a pale horizon in this seascape by Vartan Mahokian, the sea painter of the Black Sea coast. Salt wind seems to move across the surface. Short waves break in muted steel blue and slate, their crests picked out with white impasto. Low cloud banks sit heavy on the water, and a narrow band of light opens along the horizon, warming the far sky to soft amber. The brushwork is wet and loose, drag marks visible where hulls of deeper pigment cut across the swell. It suits a study or reading nook, anywhere that favors quiet weather over noise.
