Low sun rides a band of molten gold across the sea. Seascape. Sunset by John Duncan distills the Scottish Symbolist view of evening water into a compact field of color and light. The horizon sits high, so the water dominates. Copper and rose light breaks into short horizontal strokes across the swell, while the sky above cools into violet and slate. Duncan layers his pigment thinly, letting the weave of the ground breathe through the thinnest passages, and the sun itself burns as a single pale disc with no glare, just weight.
