Sea shore

Grey water slides over wet sand toward the viewer, the tide just pulled back and the shore still shining. Rylov painted the Baltic coast again and again, and Sea shore is one of his quietest takes on it. The palette runs nearly monochrome: silvered grey sky, deeper grey sea, a band of pale ochre where sand holds the last of the light. Thin brushwork lets the ground show through in the foam line, and the horizon sits high, giving most of the surface to water and wet reflections. A few darker strokes low in the frame suggest stones or distant figures. It belongs in a cool north-facing room, a hallway, or above a reading chair where the hush of the sea can do its slow work.
