Sea Piece, Barra

Barra sea and sky split the canvas almost evenly, with a pale band of beach running between. Samuel Peploe builds the scene from flat, deliberate strokes of oil paint, each wave and cloud given its own shape. Low hills sit behind. Nothing blurs. The water carries cold greens and slate blues, broken by white caps dragged on in thick impasto. Clouds bank in grey and cream, their undersides warmed with a thin wash of yellow. A dark hull, small against the swell, anchors the middle distance. It suits a hallway or a kitchen table corner, somewhere you glance at it daily and keep finding weather in it.
