Sea Etude

Waves rise and dissolve across the surface of Sea etude, a seascape by Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis. Water and sky trade places; the horizon barely holds. The Lithuanian Symbolist paints the sea as a rhythm rather than a place. Look closely and the water is built from short, repeated brushstrokes, greys and deep blues layered like notes on a staff. Pale light pools where the swell crests, while darker currents pull toward the lower edge. Nothing is fixed; everything recedes and returns. A quiet study or reading room suits it well, anywhere the eye wants somewhere calm to rest.
