Scottish Landscape

Hills fold into one another under a wide sky, the far ridge laid in a single sweep of violet grey. Scottish Landscape by Samuel Peploe carries the cool air of the west of Scotland across every inch of ground. Peploe builds the slopes from short, loaded strokes of moss green and ochre, letting patches of raw canvas flicker through between them. The sky is worked thinner, milk blue and pearl, so the land seems to push up against it. Fences and a scatter of pale buildings anchor the middle distance without fuss. Suited to a study or a hallway where light shifts through the day, it reads as calm from across the room and rewards a closer look at the brushwork.
