School House of Peter I

A small wooden house with a tiled Dutch roof stands among bare trees on the Neva embankment. Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva titled it School House of Peter I, and her woodcut renders the humble cabin in firm, precise lines. Grey ink settles into cool tonal passages across the paper, the log walls crosshatched so densely they read as weathered timber. Snow or pale sky fills the background, almost white, so the dark mass of the little building carries the whole composition. Bare branches reach upward in thin, deliberate strokes, framing the roofline. Settles naturally into a study or hallway, where its quiet monochrome discipline rewards close looking.
