Scherzo (Sonata of the Pyramids)

Pyramids climb a sky that seems to play music. In Scherzo from the Sonata of the Pyramids, Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis stacks pale triangular forms against drifting cloud bands, as if stone were notation. Look closely and the geometry softens: sunlit faces in warm ochre, shadowed slopes in dusty violet, a thin moon hanging like a fermata above the highest peak. Broad, flat planes of color meet in clean edges, while faint stippling along the horizon suggests heat shimmer and drifting sand. Everything feels scored, each slope a bar in a larger composition.
