Scenery Sketch for Khovanshchina

A boyar Moscow rises in stage form: timber towers, onion domes, and steep rooftops sketched for Mussorgsky opera Khovanshchina. Nicholas Roerich built the set design as architecture first, drama second. Broad washes of grey and violet lay the sky behind darker masses of fortress wall and church silhouette, while quick pencil lines mark stairways, gates, and the dense verticals of Old Russian building. The hand moves fast, the way a stage designer must when a whole city has to fit inside one proscenium. Suited to a hallway, a music room, or above a writing desk where theatre people and history readers pass.
