Scarborough Harbour, North Yorkshire

Fishing boats crowd the tidal basin at Scarborough, masts and rigging crossing the sky in a dark lattice above the water. Richard Jack records the working harbour with an architects eye, every hull, bollard and slate rooftop placed with care. Greys carry the scene, silvered water, cloud, wet stone, while touches of ochre and dull red pick out hulls and nets along the quay. The brushwork stays brisk, matching weather that never quite settles on this coast. A coastal study, hallway or stairwell gains a anchor here, something salted and specific rather than generic seaside.
