Savonlinna. Olavinlinna

Grey granite towers of Olavinlinna hold the lake shore at Savonlinna in this Nicholas Roerich composition. Water dominates the foreground, flat and pale, broken only by the reflection of the medieval stronghold. Roerich builds the fortress from cool stone greys, each block of masonry described with dry, tempera-like precision. The round towers rise in tiers against a sky washed in soft violet and cold rose, while low clouds press along the horizon. Pines cluster dark at the waterline, their needles rendered in short, deliberate strokes that anchor the whole scene. A Finnish landscape of this quietness suits a hallway or study, where northern light and stone-grey harmony read at a glance.
