Šaukėnai, Church Belfry

A wooden belfry rises over the small Lithuanian town of Šaukėnai, its tented roof and cross drawn by Mstislav Dobuzhinsky with the affection he reserved for provincial church spires. The tower dominates the sheet, timber sheathing rendered in fine pen lines over a muted wash of grey and ochre. Low rooftops and fence posts huddle at its base, and crosshatched shadow gives the belfry real weight against a pale, empty sky. Dobuzhinsky knew these towns from childhood wanderings, and the slightly tilted perspective gives the whole scene the feeling of standing in the road below, neck craned. Suited to a hallway, study, or reading nook where quiet, architectural images earn long looking.
