Sand pit at Weyersberg

Pale sand spills down the working face of a pit near Weyersberg, cut into the Worpswede moor, in this landscape by Paula Modersohn-Becker. Ochre and raw sienna pile up in thick, directional strokes, the brush dragged with the slope of the excavation. Dark birch trunks and pine greens crowd the rim, and a band of northern sky runs pale grey above the heath. Broken color and blunt contour show her move toward expressionism. Earth tones like these settle easily into a study or entryway, grounding a room the way the moor grounds a horizon.
