About this work

Sanctuaries and Citadels

Stone towers rise from a barren ridge, their blocky silhouettes set against temples of a higher order. Sanctuaries and Citadels belongs to the Nicholas Roerich tradition of painting the Himalaya as sacred architecture. Tempered tempera-like color governs the surface: ochre ramps, whitewashed ramparts, a sky pressed into flat panels of cobalt. Peaks sharpen to knife edges while the fortifications below keep a softened, almost earthen profile. Cliffs and walls echo one another, as if the builders had answered the mountain in the only language it understood. Suited to a study or library, where quiet geometry rewards a long look.
