About this work

Sanctuaries and Citadels

Stone sanctuaries crown the heights above a citadel of flattened blocks, painted by Nicholas Roerich in his language of temples and fortifications set against open sky. Ochre walls catch low sun while shadow pools in every gateway and stair. The composition stacks holy and defensive architecture into a single ascent, turrets and shrine roofs sharing one ridgeline. Flat planes of tempera color, earth reds against a pale heavens, give each structure weight without detail for its own sake. It suits a study or library wall, somewhere quiet where old stones and long views are welcome.
