Sanctuaries and Citadels

Stone citadels crown the ridge in Sanctuaries and Citadels, a Nicholas Roerich vision of strongholds where the Himalaya climbs into cloud. Watchtower and shrine share the same height, both weathered to the color of the slopes beneath them. Tempered tempera tones, burnt sienna, pale mineral violet, build the ramparts while hard sunlight splits every cliff face into lit and shadowed planes. Small white sanctuaries sit anchored at the base, dwarfed by rock. Roerich layers his blues thin and cold at the summit so the peaks read as breath rather than stone. Holds a study or library corner with quiet authority, especially beside dark shelving or plain plaster.
