San Maxim. Palma

Palms own the picture in San Maxim Palma, Pyotr Konchalovsky stacking each frond from blunt slabs of paint, brushwork closer to Cézanne than to botanical illustration. Nothing softens them. Ochre trunks zigzag up the composition, bark scribbled in umber crosshatching, while crowns splinter into olive and viridian wedges against a sky pressed flat in cobalt. Sunlight lands on the leaves as thick ridges of pale chrome yellow, and the ground below burns terracotta, pooled with violet shadow. A stair landing or sunroom with plain white walls suits it best; the scene carries southern heat into any room that gets real afternoon sun.
