San Gimignano

High above a tangle of sienna rooftops, the stone towers of San Gimignano stand shoulder to shoulder, painted by Pyotr Konchalovsky in dense, loaded strokes of ochre and umber. Paint sits thick on the surface, each roofline a slab of burnt orange, each shaft of masonry a pale gold plane cut with hard afternoon shadow. Cobalt sky presses down behind the campanile while cypress spires, bottle dark, anchor the foreground. The whole hillside is built from angled facets, never blended tone. A sunlit study or entry hall suits the scene, where all that baked warmth can answer dark bookshelves, leather chairs and cool plaster walls.
