San Gimignano

Thirteen medieval towers crowd the crest of a Tuscan hill in San Gimignano, the Italian subject Nicholas Roerich recorded during his travels through the country. Square shafts of grey and ochre stone stand shoulder to shoulder above red-tiled roofs, while cypress spires and low olive terraces fill the slope below. The sky takes on that deep, enamel blue Roerich favored, flattening the hilltop into a hard-edged silhouette. A library or hallway with plain plaster walls suits it best; the stone tones read quietly from across the room and reward a second, closer look.
