San Gabriel Road

San Gabriel Road by Guy Rose follows a dusty thoroughfare into the San Gabriel Valley, eucalyptus and pepper trees breaking the glare along its edge. Painted in thick, sun-struck oil strokes, the road surface carries ochre, violet shadow, and dry gold in alternating passes of the brush. Distant foothills dissolve into a pale haze where the track narrows. Rose, a Californian painter shaped by Giverny, lets broken color do the work of midday heat. It belongs in a bright hallway or a reading room that faces west.
