Salome with Head of St. John the Baptist

Salome holds the severed head of St. John the Baptist, rendered by Nicholas Roerich in his early symbolist manner. The dancer stands small against a brooding interior, her gesture half triumph, half recoil. Deep reds and oxbrow dominat the palette, broken by pale flesh tones and the cold glint of a platter. Roerich layers tempera-like pigment so shadow pools thickly around the figures while halos of lamplight lift the faces forward. Every drapery fold carries hard contour, drawn rather than dissolved. A powerful focal image for a dim study, a library reading corner, or an entryway that favors the dark and dramatic.
