Saint-Petersburg

Spires and palace facades rise above the Neva embankment in Saint-Petersburg, a city scene by Eugene Lanceray rendered in fine ink and watercolour line. Drawing dominates here: architectural draughtsmanship at its sharpest. Lanceray traces rococo cornices, slender campaniles and dome-topped cathedrals with precise hatching, the tonal washes shifting from cool sepia to a pale northern grey. Figures move small along quays and colonnades, dwarfed by baroque frontispieces and the vertical rhythm of russian classicism. Every rooftop edge is weighed, every shadow placed with intent.
