Saint-Petersburg

Spires and palace facades rise above the Neva embankment in Saint-Petersburg, a city scene by Eugene Lanceray rendered in fine ink and watercolour line. Drawing dominates here: architectural draughtsmanship at its sharpest. Lanceray traces rococo cornices, slender campaniles and dome-topped cathedrals with precise hatching, the tonal washes shifting from cool sepia to a pale northern grey.
