Saint Isaacs Cathedral Under the Snow

Snow settles over the colossal dome of Saint Isaacs cathedral, its granite colonnade half blurred by whitefall. Mstislav Dobuzhinsky rendered the Petersburg landmark as a pale monolith dissolving into winter sky. Grey wash and delicate linework carry the weight here: the gold cupola reduced to a dim ember above drifting flakes, tiny figures crossing the square below like ink flecks, spires of surrounding buildings fading at the edges. The palette holds to pearl, slate, and the faintest umber in the masonry. A cathedral scene this hushed belongs in a study or reading room, where its stillness can settle over the shelves.
