Sails on the Oise

White sails crowd the river. Gustave Loiseau painted Sails on the Oise with quick, layered strokes, catching hulls, masts and moving water in a single grey-green breath. The canvas stays loose and alive. Short jabs of cobalt and lead white build the sky; darker keels and rigging cross the current in broken diagonals; the far bank dissolves into soft violet and umber haze. Every brushstroke of the river surface carries a different weight of light. A riverside study, a hallway beside a window, or a reading nook with cool northern light gives it room to breathe.
