Saalfeld Fairy Grottoes

Ochre and jade minerals crust every ledge of the Saalfeld Fairy Grottoes, the famed underground chambers that painter Max Pietschmann captured deep beneath the Thuringian hills. Stalactites hang like poured wax above a still pool, its copper-green surface doubling every formation. Rust, sienna and malachite bands ripple across the rock, built up in thin oil glazes that let lamplight seem to glow from within the stone. A dim hallway or wood-panelled study gives these subterranean tones the shadow they ask for; keep neighbouring textiles in slate, moss or unbleached linen.
