Ryazan. House of Oleg

Whitewashed walls of the House of Oleg stand above the Ryazan Kremlin in this Pyotr Konchalovsky view, rendered in the loaded, architectural brushwork that marked his Russian landscapes. Sun strikes the plaster at a steep angle, picking out cracks and shutter frames in swift dark strokes. A slate roof pitches against pale sky, and a bulbous church dome rises behind the elms. Loaded touches of cream, ochre and grey-green build the facades, Cezanne structure softened by thick river air. A study lined with deep shelves, or a dim entryway off the street, suits these weathered provincial tones; the scene asks for rooms that carry their own patina.
