About this work

Ruins of a Chinese Fort

A weathered fort crumbles across the ridge, its ramparts reduced to broken lines of clay and shadow. Nicholas Roerich renders the ruin in muted earth tones, the watchtower walls dissolving into the horizon. Cracked parapets catch a low sun. Loose stones trail down the slope like shed scales, and pale sky presses flat against the last standing segment of wall. Thin washes of ochre and grey build the crumbling masonry, crosshatching deepening every breach and gully carved by centuries of wind. Suited to a study or library, where its quiet endurance rewards slow looking.
