Rue Neuve in Bruges

A narrow Flemish street slips into the distance under a pale northern sky, the subject of Rue Neuve in Bruges by Mstislav Dobuzhinsky. His hand records every brick and lintel. Stepped gables crowd the lane while bare branches thread across the façades, drawn in fine ink line and washed with cool greys and faded brick red. Small figures, barely more than silhouettes, animate the cobbles, and the perspective tilts gently the way memory tilts. The tonality is hushed, all dove grey, umber and cold daylight.
