Rua em Oslo

Snow holds a narrow Oslo street in place. Rua em Oslo shows a winter lane rendered by Harald Sohlberg, the Norwegian painter who made silence his medium. Bare birches line the curb, and a church spire rises above the roofline. Every surface carries frost. Sohlberg builds the scene from cool blues and deep shadow, the snow itself shaded with violet and grey rather than left white. Windows glow faintly behind frost patterned on the glass. Footprints carve a single dark line through the drift, drawing the eye downhill toward lamplight. A study, hallway, or quiet reading room gives a picture of this kind the hush it asks for.
