Roundhouse at High Bridge

A brick roundhouse hunkers beside the High Bridge span, its arched engine bays and smoke-stained parapets rendered in George Luks heavy Ashcan impasto. Slate roofs go charcoal against a sky churned with lead white and yellowed haze. Smoke drifts from the stacks, rails gleam wet, and the stone aqueduct tower rises behind the sheds like a held breath. Luks loads his blacks with blue and his grays with rust, so every wall reads as weather made visible. An industrial cityscape for a study, hallway, or reading corner with brick and iron of its own.
