Rough Day

A fishing boat strains against choppy grey-green water, hull tipping hard to one side while spray lifts off the wave crests. Fujishima Takeji paints the struggle in thick, loaded brushwork, every stroke of oil paint dragging across the surface like wind across open sea. Overhead the sky churns in ash grey and bruised violet, a thin seam of pale light breaking through at the horizon where the water runs almost white. Wet rope, dark timber, foam flecked with cold light. Somewhere low, the coast waits. A study or hallway with cool, northern light suits its briny palette, hung where weather and salt still feel close.
