Rostov Veliky. Yard in the Kremlin

Cathedral domes and fortress walls enclose a quiet Kremlin yard in Rostov Veliky, painted by Nicholas Roerich. The title names the place; the composition does the rest. Silvery onion domes press against a pearly sky, their bulbs swelling above drum towers of weathered stone. Inside the enclosure, low rooftops and patched masonry catch a cold northern light, whites and greys laid over warm ochre underpaint. Brushwork stays economical, almost dry, letting the mud-colored ground flicker through walls and sky alike. Figures are absent; architecture alone carries the mood, monumental yet hushed. A study, hallway, or library shelf of books on Russian architecture would keep this courtyard company.
