Rostov Veliky. Interior of Church of Savior

Columns and vaulted arches fill the nave of an ancient church at Rostov Veliky in this Nicholas Roerich composition. Light falls from above, catching frescoed walls and the dark frame of the iconostasis. Deep greens and burnt ochres dominate the interior. Cool grey light slides across stone pillars, while gilt glints faintly on painted icons stacked in tiered rows. Shadows pool along the flagstone floor, and the far altar reads as a single warm blur of red and gold. Roerich was a devoted traveler through old Russian towns, and his churches always carry both grandeur and silence. A study or library with books and wood furniture would suit this somber, luminous interior well.
