Rostov the Great

Cathedral domes rise above the ramparts of Rostov, painted by Nicholas Roerich in his characteristic tempera cadence. Green cupolas catch low light while the white kremlin walls stretch across the middle distance, firm and unbroken. Below them, Lake Nero flattens into a pale copper band, its surface broken by reeds and the small dark notes of boats. Roerich builds the sky in flat, layered planes of blue and pearl, letting the architecture sit almost weightless against it. Every edge is clean, every color laid down without hesitation. Suited to a study or hallway, where quiet northern light echoes the mood.
