Roses

Roses crowd the picture plane, petals swinging open in shades of shell pink and deep carmine. Stefan Luchian, the Romanian post-impressionist, painted flowers with the weight of portraiture, and here each bloom holds its own center of gravity against a muted ground. Look at the stems: wiry, thorned, cut low. The greenery is worked in olive and sage, layered wet over dry so the leaves keep their edges. His brushloads sit thick where light catches a petal, then thin to a stain in the shadowed folds. Suited to a dining room or a bedroom corner where the crimson reads warm at dusk.
