Roses

Roses spill across the table in a loose, generous bunch, petals loaded with cream and coral pigment. Peploe builds each bloom from thick, deliberate strokes, the paint standing proud of the surface so the flowers read almost sculptural at close range. Behind them, a cooler ground of sage and slate grey keeps the arrangement taut. Leaves flick in viridian and dark blue green, stems crisscrossing at odd angles rather than fanning out politely. The vase itself is barely described, a dark shape catching one highlight, letting the blossoms do all the work. Scottish Colourist discipline runs through it: colour is chosen for structure, not prettiness. A dining room or sunlit kitchen suits it best, anywhere with morning light and honest furniture.
