Roses

Roses spill across the picture plane in Peploe, petals built up in thick buttery strokes of white, blush and deep carmine. The blooms sit in a low vessel against a ground of cool green and slate, each petal edged with a darker turn so the whole bouquet reads as sculpture rather than decoration. Brushwork is visible everywhere, loaded and deliberate, the oil paint standing off the surface in ridges that catch the light. Leaves slice through in viridian and sap green, cutting the softness of the flowers with hard angular shapes. A dining room or conservatory suits it well, somewhere with linen, dark wood and morning light.
