Roses

Roses crowd the vase so densely that petals press against the edges of the composition, a still life Konchalovsky built in thick, confident color. Cream and carmine blooms jostle for room at the mouth. Each blossom turns from buttery yellow at its rim to deep crimson at the heart, paint laid on heavy enough to cast its own shadow. Stems knot beneath in olive green, one leaf curling over the table edge. The background sinks to near black, pushing every flower forward. Set it in a dining room above the sideboard or an entryway table, where the heavy blooms greet arrivals with midsummer abundance.
