Roses in a Jug

Roses jam the neck of a squat stoneware jug, petals layered so densely the whole bouquet outweighs the vessel beneath. Pyotr Konchalovsky named the still life plainly: Roses in a Jug. Paint sits thick on the surface, carmine and shell pink dragged wet into wet until petal edges soften and blur. The pot below wears a mottled grey glaze, its round belly catching one cool highlight, while jagged leaves in deep viridian anchor the arrangement against a dark, quiet ground. Picture it above a dining room sideboard or greeting guests in an entryway; the flowers read clearly from across the room yet hold their detail up close.
