Roses in a Chinese Vase

Roses crowd the mouth of a blue and white Chinese vase, petals stacked in creams and pinks that spill past the rim. Samuel Peploe paints the bouquet head on, no backdrop, no table edge to soften it. The blooms take up nearly the whole surface. The vase itself carries cobalt leafwork against a chalky white ground, its glaze catching light along one shoulder. Peploe sets thick, loaded strokes of rose pink beside cooler shadowed greens where stems cross, and the dark outlines he favoured hold each petal firm. Brushwork stays visible everywhere, buttery in the petals, drier in the background. A dining room or breakfast nook suits it well, anywhere morning light can meet those pinks.
