Roses in a Blue and White Vase, Black Background

Roses crowd a blue and white vase in this still life by Samuel Peploe, the blooms so densely packed they seem to push outward against the dark field behind them. Cobalt and cream bands circle the vase body, its glazed surface catching a sliver of light along one shoulder. The petals run from pale blush to deep crimson, laid on in thick, deliberate strokes that leave the brushwork visible. Around everything, the black background closes in without apology, sharpening every edge. A dining room or reading nook with pale walls gives these roses the contrast they demand.
