Roses and Fan

Roses spill across the table while a folding fan rests beside them, half open, its ribs catching the light. Samuel Peploe builds the whole arrangement on that tension between softness and structure. The blooms carry heavy strokes of cream and coral pink, edges loaded with paint so the petals seem to thicken at the rim. Behind them the fan opens in pale ivory planes, each fold drawn with a thin dark line that cuts the lushness of the flowers. Cool greens and a slate shadow under the table keep the pink from going sweet. A bedroom vanity, a dressing room corner, or any quiet spot where a little French elegance belongs.
