Roses and Catkins

Roses in heavy bloom lean against a spray of pale catkins, their petals laid on in thick, muted rose and dusty violet. Borisov-Musatov builds the bouquet almost like memory, edges soft, color sunk into shadow. Look closely and the surface does the work: powdery pink ground down to near grey, willow catkins catching a yellow-green highlight, deep blue-green foliage massed behind. Nothing is outlined. Form arrives through tonal shifts, the Russian symbolist way of making still life feel inward. This reproduction suits a reading nook or a quiet bedroom wall, where its low light and hushed palette can carry the room.
