Roofs

Tin ridges and slate slopes stack upward until the whole view becomes geometry. Roofs, by Mstislav Dobuzhinsky, turns an ordinary city skyline into a patterned jumble of planes, chimneys, and slanted lines. Look closely and the picture builds itself: dormer windows punched into grey slopes, a chimney pot balancing at an odd angle, thin crosshatching pulling shadow out of every eave. Muted ochre and slate tones press the rooftops together while thin spires and weathervanes break the horizontal rhythm. The eye climbs the composition the way a cat crosses a yard, ledge by ledge. Made for a hallway or stairwell where narrow vertical space suits a skyward subject, it rewards anyone who pauses on the climb.
