Rome. Column of Trajan

A spiral of carved soldiers climbs the stone shaft in Rome. Pyotr Konchalovsky painted the Column of Trajan as one continuous marble ribbon winding from base to sky. Broad oil strokes turn the chiseled procession into dabs of ochre, umber and warm grey, each figure a few loaded touches. Horses, standards and shields compress into a helix; below, pedestrians cross a sunlit piazza while umbrella pines lean in at the left. It suits a study lined with leather books, an entryway in travertine and oak, any room where the eye wants a long vertical climb.
