Roman Landscape

Cypress spires and umbrella pines punctuate a hillside washed in Roman haze. Fujishima Takeji built this landscape from silvery greens and sun-bleached ochres, the kind of light that sits low and warm over the campagna toward evening. Stone walls thread between fields, their pale geometry breaking the slope into quiet planes. Distance dissolves the far ridge into violet and cream, while nearer trees hold their shadows in deep, cool olive. The brushwork stays calm, each stroke laid flat and even, closer to fresco than to gesture. A study, hallway, or reading nook with pale plaster walls gives this countryside the still air it asks for.
