Rohtang Pass

The Rohtang pass road bends upward through grey scree, switchback after switchback, toward a rim of old snow. Nicholas Roerich sets the whole climb beneath blue deepened almost to violet at the edge. Ochre slopes fall away on both sides, streaked with long cobalt shadows where the ridge drops. A pale track threads the middle distance; tiny figures walk it with pack animals, small as punctuation against all that stone. Tempera laid in broad, unblended planes keeps every surface matte and still. In a study or entryway, its high-altitude palette cools a warm room and draws the eye upward along the road, just as the climb intends.
