Rohtang Pass

Rohtang Pass opens in Nicholas Roerich painting as a corridor of blue shadow between Himalayan heights, the gateway the artist crossed on horseback during years in the Kullu valley. Broad planes of cobalt and ultramarine carve the peaks, while the pass floor holds a band of pale snow and a thread of ochre path. Thin dark strokes mark distant travellers, small against slopes that swallow scale. The sky reads flat and mineral, pigment laid almost like tile. Suited to a study or library wall, especially beside maps or travel books, where its cold clarity rewards long looking.
